“At Sparrow, everything we do expresses our commitment to achieve the best health outcomes possible for all the communities and people we serve.”
We all know that the future of healthcare begins right here in our own hometown. Here at Sparrow, we are deeply committed to our role as your community-owned, community-governed health system. We know how essential we are to the region’s quality of life, health, and vitality. Since that day in 1912 when Sparrow Hospital first opened its doors on Michigan Avenue, our vast, multi-faceted healthcare network has expanded from its Lansing headquarters across the entire mid-Michigan region. We are dedicated to bringing hometown healthcare to every mid-Michigan hometown.
But Sparrow has never rested on its own laurels. We work tirelessly to increase the organization’s agility, prepare for future growth, and expand our regional presence while never forgetting that the Patient is at the center of everything we do. Everywhere within the Sparrow system, we are reinvesting in Patient care to meet the changing needs of the community.
That vision is nowhere more evident than in this year’s opening of the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center in the new Sparrow Plaza. This $64 million, 132,000-square-foot facility is twice as large as the former Cancer Center, and can treat 30 percent more Patients. The center offers state-of-the-art cancer treatment with three linear accelerators for radiation treatment and 40 chemotherapy bays. This allows us to provide best-in-class, Patient- and family-centered cancer care as close to home as possible, with all the added benefits of our membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
Sparrow Plaza is also home to the Sparrow Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute, with expanded diagnostic, lab, and pharmacy services now in one convenient location. We have also increased Patient care, access and affordability with the opening of a new Sparrow Urgent Care on Michigan Avenue, and have added new treatment areas to Sparrow Hospital’s Emergency Department.
Within the walls of all our brick and mortar investments, you’ll find technological advances that are revolutionizing healthcare, such as electronic medical records. Sparrow is proud to have achieved HIMSS Level 7, an environment where paper charts are no longer used. Indeed, Sparrow’s strength is built on our commitment to reinvesting our earnings in the people, technology, and facilities necessary to improve Patient access and respond to the needs of our region. The result: from our Level I Trauma Center designation to our Magnet nursing status, Sparrow continues to earn the extraordinary accolades of true healthcare excellence.
As Sparrow expands and adapts to the ever-changing healthcare marketplace, so must our model for governance change. In 2017 Sparrow appointed a separate Board of Directors for Sparrow Health System and Sparrow Hospital. We are confident this new leadership model will help guide Sparrow into a strong and dynamic future.
The Health System Board will focus on the components of team medicine and govern the growing number of Sparrow Community Hospitals, Physician practices, outpatient facilities, and services such as home care, the Michigan Athletic Club and Physicians Health Plan.
As a separate and distinct entity, the Sparrow Hospital Board will be able to prioritize and focus its time and energy on promoting excellence in quality, safety and Patient care satisfaction at the very core of our regional healthcare system.
Of course, none of this is possible without a visionary roadmap to achieve our goal of greater efficiency and affordability while providing better health outcomes. Our Value Transformation Project is working to identify opportunities throughout the system to reduce expenses, improve accountability, and achieve greater consistency in clinical practice. We all need healthcare to be more affordable – Patients, employers, and insurers alike. At the same time, we need to be sure we are meeting the needs of our region in a sustainable fashion that will allow us to remain mid-Michigan’s provider of choice for many, many decades to come.
I hope you will join me in this great enterprise of ours in the year ahead as we continue to thrive and grow as mid-Michigan’s premier healthcare organization.
