BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD ASSOCIATION BLUE DISTINCTION+
Five Sparrow specialty areas earned BCBS Blue Distinction+ designations for delivering quality specialty care safely, effectively, and efficiently:
BARIATRIC SURGERY CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
Sparrow’s Bariatric Surgery program was designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Sparrow is one of only 7 percent of all hospitals nationwide to earn Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Nurse Magnet Designation is the nation’s most prestigious honor for nursing achievement and excellence.
Sparrow was originally designated as a Magnet hospital in 2009 and our team’s ongoing commitment to clinical and service excellence helped meet the stringent redesignation standards in 2014. Sparrow continues to outperform the Magnet hospital mean in many categories including percentage of falls, Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers, and Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL EXAMINERS
Sparrow Forensic Pathology Department, Offices of the Medical Examiner, has been accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CARDIOVASCULAR AND PULMONARY REHABILITATIION (AACVPR)
The Sparrow Pulmonary Rehabilitation program received AACVPR certification recognizing its commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing standards of care.
HEALTH INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY AWARDS
The Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Michigan Chapter presented its Leadership Award to Sparrow Vice President and CMIO Michael Zaroukian, M.D., PhD, MACP, FHIMSS, in recognition of his national work on the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC-HIT) Federal Advisory Committee (FACA) Workgroups, service as HIMSS North America Board Chair-elect, and support for Michigan HIMSS. He was also honored with the American Medical Informatics Association’s Leadership Award for advancing AMIA’s efforts in improving the use of Electronic Health Records.
Sparrow has achieved national recognition that places us among the top 3.4 percent of U.S. hospitals and 4.3 percent of all ambulatory practices in the U.S. having earned Stage 7 status by HIMSS for electronic medical record adoption.
Sparrow was recognized on the roster of “Most Connected Hospitals 2015-16” in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, reflecting Sparrow’s use of innovation and technology to improve Patient care.
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
The Sparrow Comprehensive Stroke Center continues to be recognized by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association by achieving the Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll awards.
THE JOINT COMMISSION
The Sparrow Comprehensive Stroke Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center Intra-Cycle Certification and recertification as a Disease- Specific Care Comprehensive Stroke Center.
The Sparrow Total Joint Replacement Program was awarded continued accreditation by The Joint Commission, reflecting the highest national standards for safety and quality of care in these orthopedic procedures.
BABY FRIENDLY® DESIGNATION
Sparrow Hospital was designated a Baby Friendly® Hospital by the World Health Organization (WHO), a global initiative to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies through successful breastfeeding.
AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION The Diabetes Education program within Sparrow Diabetes and Endocrinology Services was surveyed and received a positive ADA review.
NURSES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Fifteen Sparrow Nurses received Critical Care Registered Nurse certification within a six-month period.
Mary Free Bed at Sparrow received the Five Star Excellence Award by Professional Research Consultants, Inc. in 2015 for scoring in the top 10 percent nationally for “Excellent” responses for Inpatient Rehabilitation Services – Overall Quality of Care.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) Three Year Full Accreditation.
Publication in Journal of Clinical Oncology: “Phase III Trial Comparing Chemotherapy Schedules in High-Risk Early-Stage Breast Cancer,” “Circulating Tumor Cells and Response to Chemotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer,” and “Randomized Phase II Study of Carboplatin and Paclitaxel with Either Linifanib or Placebo for Advanced Nonsquamous Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer.”
Since 1998, the Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club (MAC) has been recognized on Club Industry’s Top 100 Clubs in the United States with a 2015 ranking of 73. Club Industry’s Top 100 Clubs ranks the top 100 revenue-producing club companies in the industry representing more than 9,800 clubs. The MAC was recognized for several reasons including being one of the largest revenue-producing clubs in the U.S., its high customer retention rate and number of active accounts.

SMG St. Johns has become the first practice in the United States associated with a critical access hospital to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Primary Care Medical Home (PCMH) Certification.
CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES (CMS)
A total of 145 (100 percent) of all Sparrow’s eligible ambulatory providers system-wide met CMS 2015 requirements for meaningful use of Electronic Health Records in the CMS Electronic Health Records (EHR) Incentive Program.
PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH CONSULTANTS OVERALL TOP PERFORMER AWARD
Lynn Toaz, D.O., (SMG Ionia) was awarded the Professional Research Consultants (PRC) Overall Top Performer Award for outstanding Patient experience.
The Sparrow Clinical Research Institute (SCRI) was selected for the fourth time as a Partner in Excellence for St. Jude Medical Research. The honor is award to a limited number of clinical research sites each year.
