American Heart Association Awards
The Sparrow Comprehensive Stroke Center continues to be recognized by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association by achieving the Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll awards.
Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
Sparrow’s Bariatric Surgery program continues to be recognized as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Award
MDHHS awarded a Birthing Center grant to Sparrow’s Mother Baby Center to connect inpatient to outpatient services as part of the Michigan Infant Mortality Reduction Plan.
Society of Thoracic Surgeons Three-Star Rating
The Sparrow Cardiovascular Surgery program earned the STS highest attainable 3-star rating for quality of heart surgery.
The Joint Commission
The Sparrow Comprehensive Stroke Center has been certified by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center since 2012.
The Sparrow Total Joint Replacement Program has been accredited by The Joint Commission for five consecutive years, reflecting the highest national standards for safety and quality of care in these orthopedic procedures.
World Health Organization Baby Friendly® Designation
Sparrow remains mid-Michigan’s first and only hospital to earn WHO Baby Friendly® Designation, a national benchmark in quality care for mothers and babies.
American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing
Sparrow remains one of only six percent of all hospitals nationwide to earn Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and continues to outperform the Magnet hospital mean in many categories. For the past four years, Sparrow has been among an even more elite group of hospitals that have achieved Magnet redesignation. In 2016, Sparrow’s Chief Nursing Officer received the Clinical Nurse Leader Visionary Leader Award, one of the highest honors of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
Michigan Hospital Association
Sparrow was selected as a Tier II hospital within a nine-hospital collaborative to work on High Reliability by the Michigan Hospital Association.

Sparrow Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer Michael Zaroukian, M.D., PhD, MACP, FHIMSS, was named one of the top 30 CMIO experts in healthcare by Health Data Management.
Nurses Professional Development
Three additional Sparrow Nurses received Critical Care Registered Nurse certification in 2016, for a total of 18 CPHQ certifications since 2015. In 2016 there was a 5.5 percent increase overall in national nursing certifications, from 321 to 386 certified Nurses.
American Nurses Association Awards
Sparrow RNICU presentations received the Modern Healthcare Team Award at MANA annual conference and the Innovation Award at the annual State of Nursing.
Comprehensive Pharmacy Services Awards
Sparrow Pharmacy earned the 2016 Best Practice Award and was named the Mid-West Region 2016 Site of the Year and Mid-West Region 2016 Clinical Site of the Year by Comprehensive Pharmacy Services.
Capital Area United Way Volunteer Awards
Two Sparrow Hospital Volunteers were honored as CAUW’s Adult Volunteer of the Year and Youth Volunteer of the Year.
Medical Oncology received three-year re-certification with Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI).
Multi-Disciplinary Breast Clinic continues its three-year full accreditation with National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
American College of Surgeons
Sparrow Cancer Center received its 3-Year Commission on Cancer Program Re-Certification from the American College of Surgeons.
Since 1998, the Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club (MAC) has been recognized on Club Industry's Top 100 Clubs in the United States with a 2016 ranking of #70. Club Industry’s Top 100 Clubs ranks the top 100 revenue producing club companies in the industry representing more than 9,800 clubs. The MAC was recognized for several reasons including the highest increase in hospital-based facilities with a 4.3 percent increase for $11.03 million.
